NEWS RELEASE

Legendary group The Irish Rovers at the Capitol Theatre

(Moncton, February 8, 2010) – The Capitol Theatre presents The Irish Rovers on Friday, February 26th at 8 p.m. These international ambassadors of Irish music have charmed and entertained people around the world for four decades, and continue to delight audiences with their exciting stage shows.

Throughout the years, The Irish Rovers have maintained their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer – one that will soon have you singing and clapping along. Their songs have become anthems of revelry and joy among generation after generation of fans.

The story of the Irish Rovers starts in Canada, where the 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from Northern Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They ended up singing together ‘til dawn; and so the Irish Rovers were launched. After other members were recruited, the folk clubs of California became the learning grounds for the young Rovers. In 1966, “The First of the Irish Rovers”, a live album recorded at “The Icehouse” in Pasadena, was released. It generated enough excitement to warrant another album, and from this release came the million selling single “The Unicorn”, the band’s signature song to this day. Through the 70’s and early 80’s, the Rovers brought their magic to television with a weekly series for the CBC, and later, a series on the Global Network. In 1980-81, The Rovers once again soared to the top of the pop and country charts with “Wasn’t That A Party”. This real-life celebration was written by their friend, U.S. folk singer Tom Paxton, after he witnessed one of the band’s famous post-show parties. It has gone on to become an international anthem of good cheer.

The Irish Rovers continue to perform in theatres around the world, with original members George Millar and Wilcil McDowell. Will Millar retired from the band in 1995; and sadly, Jimmy Ferguson passed away in 1997. Joe Millar retired in 2005, and his son Ian Millar has since joined the group. Completing the Irish Rovers line-up today are John Reynolds and Sean O’Driscoll, a multi-instrumentalist. The Irish Rovers are still passionate about performing and will continue to tour and entertain their legions of fans.

Tickets for The Irish Rovers at the Capitol Theatre are now on sale at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, l’Escaouette, Frank’s Music, Monument Lefebvre and l’Université de Moncton, at $30.50 to $34.50. Tickets are also available by phone at (506) 856-4379 or 1-800-567-1922, or online at

SONIC CONCERTS presents Wolf Parade at The Market in Fredericton, April 4

Montreal indie-rock band Wolf Parade will make their Fredericton debut in support of their latest release At Mount Zoomer (Sub Pop) at The Market on Sunday, April 4 at 9 p.m.

Comprised of singer-guitarist Dan Boeckner, keyboardist Hadji Baraka, singer-keyboardist Spencer Krug, drummer Arlen Thompson and guitarist Dante DeCaro, Wolf Parade formed in 2003.  Their critically-acclaimed debut full-length album Apologies to the Queen Mary (Sub Pop, 2005) was produced by Modest Mouse frontman Isaac BrockIt also garnered them a 2006 Polaris Prize nomination as well as comparisons to both Brock’s band and Arcade Fire.

Released in 2008, Wolf Parade’s sophomore Sub Pop release At Mount Zoomer is nine sprawling tracks recorded in a Montreal church owned by Arcade Fire.  Thompson recorded and engineered the entire album.

Rolling Stone said, “...this Montreal band is the product of two fiercely creative minds that come together in a beautiful mess...It’s largely indecipherable, totally animalistic and frequently breathtaking.”

Spin Magazine said, “...minutes that touch on prog, glam, indie rock, and electro pop. It's an irresistible, exhilarating mix that sounds like no band but Wolf Parade.”

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 day of show (including tax) and go on sale this Thursday, January 28 at 10 a.m.  Tickets will be available at Backstreet Records (384 Queen Street), all Ticketpro outlets, by phone at 1-888-311-9090 and online at www.sonicconcerts.com.  Major credit cards are accepted and service charges apply.  This show is restricted to ages 19+.  Doors open at 8 p.m.

Benefit Concert in Moncton

(Moncton, January 24, 2010) - The Capitol Theatre and a collective of Maritime artists present the Solidarité Acadie-Haiti Benefit Concert on Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

Artistic Director Monique Poirier, Musical Director François Émond and musicians Denis Hachey and Christian Boulay will gather more than 35 artists on the Capitol Theatre Main Stage for an emotional concert. Tickets are on sale for $25 and profits from this event will go to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

Monique Poirier, instigator of the Moncton Benefit Concert, couldn't wait to do her part for the cause. "I was rehearsing in Halifax when I heard that Normand Thériault and Donat Lacroix were putting on a benefit concert in Caraquet on January 24 and I thought that South-eastern New Brunswick should follow their example! I met with Marc Chouinard the next day and consulted with Normand Thériault, sent a few emails and less than two days later, an impressive number of artists confirmed they could make it and a great show is being put together. I am overwhelmed at everyone's generosity. The magnitude of what's happening in Haiti is unimaginable and we feel very helpless. The concerts are meant to gather everyone - artists and audience, and the results are magical. Plus, the work we're doing is very rewarding."

THOM SWIFT

Blue Sky Day (GroundSwell/Warner), set for release on February 16, 2010, is the second full studio album by multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Thom Swift.

His debut recording Into the Dirt was released nationally in Sept. 2007.  It won an East Coast Music Award, a Maple Blues Award, a Galaxie Rising Star prize and two Music Nova Scotia Awards in 2008.  He was also selected by CBC’s Song Quest in 2009 as one of Canada’s top songwriters.

Swift’s much respected musical reputation has been established with years of touring and recording with the acclaimed blues-jazz group Hot Toddy Trio.  With nine albums to their credit and a career that spans over 15 years, the group has played numerous Canadian and International folk, jazz and blues festivals.

Like his first recording, Blue Sky Day was produced by Swift and Halifax-based engineer/producer Charles Austin (Joel Plaskett, Buck 65, Matt Mays).  Featuring 11 original songs and a cover of “No Depression In Heaven”, it offers a distinctive blend of roots, blues, rock, folk, country and rag style.

Special guests on the album, include acclaimed multi-instrumentalist J.P. Cormier and blues-roots artist Matt Andersen along with Swift’s band percussionist Geoff Arsenault (Ray Bonneville, Mary Jane Lamond), Brian Bourne (Rawlins Cross) on bass and Chapman stick, guitarist Chris Corrigan (Rita MacNeil, Mary Jane Lamond) and keyboard master Bill Stevenson on piano and organ.

With the release of Blue Sky Day, Swift will perform across the country, including shows at the Olympics in Vancouver, ECMA Concert Series in Sydney, album release concerts in Halifax, New Glasgow, Fredericton, Saint John, Riverview (March 25, 8 pm), Charlottetown and Toronto.

Dear Moncton Locals,

Can you please add this event to your calendar?  thank you!!

This is our Country.  This is our future.  Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament are rallying at cities across the country our local Moncton rally is at City Hall on Main Street on Saturday January 23 from 1:00-4:00 pm.  Our facebook group has over 200,000 members.  Every rally across the country will be taking place on the same day at the same time.  We are collecting petition signatures during the rally events across Canada and delivering them to Ottawa at the same time.  Elected officials will be speaking and participating in a short Q & A at there local events.  What to bring???  Friends, Family, Dogs, Flags, Signs, Noise Makers, and questions!  SEE YOU THERE!!!  PLEASE STAND UP!!!     SPEAK OUT!!!     TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!

In response to the governments decision to prorogue parliament.  Why did they do it? Lets talk about the issues!

#1. Canada’s failure at the Copenhagen Climate Summit....

    -The Prime Minister/ CANADA

:DID NOT show up to the very important preliminary meetings which were attend by other countries.

:DID NOT give an official answer, when asked, as to wether or not Canada would even attend the talks in Copenhagen until about a week before.  Finally bowing to intense political pressure - shock from the world that We would even consider not attending because of our status as an energy super power.

:DID NOT have an environmental platform upon arrival in Copenhagen.

:DID NOT send our country’s leader, but instead a delegate on behalf of our government to attend the talks.  Other world leaders were there from day 1.

:DID NOT attend most of the meetings they were scheduled to attend INCLUDING VERY CRUCIAL ONES!!

:Each country in attendance was assigned a “negotiator tracker” (people in the red shirts) to follow them to meetings, report, help, etc.  All of the negotiator trackers were in constant contact with each other trying to make these talks more efficient.

:DID NOT cooperate with our negotiator tracker (a very nice women named Rose), INFACT would not return her calls and went missing for days on end.

:DID!!! leek a document stating we have no intension of lowering emissions...  INFACT we are projecting an increase!

DID!!!  announce publicly this document to be the true Canadian Plan.

DID!!!  have Stephen Harper show up in the last minute and put his signature on a NOT LEGALLY BINDING agreement to do the best we can.... weak.

DID!!!  receive the “Fossil of the Year” award this year! (our third year in a row)!!  A satirical award granted to us this year for being the country that did the most to OBSTRUCT climate negotiations...every country was eligible BUT WE WON!

DID!!! ignite protest around the world in ANGER toward Canada siting that we actually do not have the right to be so unaccountable to future generations.

DID!!! lower the global opinion of Canada/Canadian’s for allowing our government to do this....

With the proroguing of parliament All Questions and Any Accountability ~ STOPPED & SILENCED ...........  for now....  Stephen Harper in BANKING on our short term memory and APATHY.

#2. Allegations that the Canadian military knowingly transfered Afghan detainees (civilians) to be tortured.... (at the same time discussions about our inaction at The Copenhagen Climate Summit were picking up momentum in the House of Commons.).....

One Canadian military field officer Richard Colvin came forward with the allegations of torture.  The Conservative governments official response was that they “know nothing” and then proceeded to attack the character of the man who came forward.  The opposition asked for a transparent investigation.  The Conservative government sited ‘national security’ no can do, there is nothing illegal happening in Afghanistan, end of story.  Then MORE Canadian military personnel came forward signing statement saying yes they did know of torture taking place.  An investigative committee was being set up to find answers.  WITHIN DAYS PARLIAMENT WAS PROROGUED .... All Investigative Comities ~ STOPPED & SILENCED ......... hmmmmm...we know our government stand on Omar Khadr.  He is the Canadian born CHILD solider that was “suspected” of throwing a grenade in the direction of the American military while in another country.  He has been held without trail and physically and mentally tortured in Guantanamo Bay since he was 15 years old.  I believe he is 22 or 23 now.  A charitable lawyer on his behalf has taken his case threw the Canadian courts system.  It went to the Supreme Court of Canada, the verdict was that the government was ordered to bring him back to Canada.  What did Stephen Harper say??   nah nope noooo  I don’t think so, I don’t care what the Supreme Court says.   ... A CHILD!!!

#3. Pension Crisis.... This is a very real issue for the elderly in our communities, they can not wait months, there money is being cut off, even after paying into CPP for years!  With the proroguing of parliament All Discussions and much Needed Decisions ~ STOPPED & SILENCED

#4. 37 bills being debated in Parliament..... with the proroguing of parliament ~ STOPPED!  Discussion on bills MUST START FROM SCRATCH in March, wasting months of hard work by all parties.  Thus WASTING TIME  &  TAX DOLLARS....  some of these Bills the Conservative Party put a lot of time and energy into and were very close to being passed into law.....  which brings us to #5

#5. WHY PROROGUE??? .....1. lack of accountability

                      2. lack of transparency

                      3. lack of priorities

4.lack of respect for Canadians and tax dollars

                      5. ASK YOURSELF WHY

** Proroguing is within our governments power for a reason BUT that power must not be abused!  There are important and hard questions that need to be asked, debated, and ANSWERED in the House of Commons NOW.

~I am NOT COOL with the idea that its ok to prorogue parliament because it would be more convenient.... where is the ACCOUNTABILITY?

**If Stephen Harper is proroguing because he knows something we don’t.  If something horrible has happened or is happening within our military.  If he has known about it all along.  If he is worried that this will come to light during the Olympics while the world media is here and reflect badly upon us as a nation or on member of the government Him and His cabinet personally.  If Canada has broken international law by not honoring the Geneva Convention Treaty... Well I want to know......

~I am NOT COOL with the idea that I live in a free country and have a false sense of freedom.  As Canadian citizens I think letting our government obviously pull a fast one by us while we are too apathetic to care, defeated before we even try, well that is much worse in the eyes of the world media... and they are watching!  The situation was bad enough before the decision to prorogue, trying to cover up these allegations only creates a cloud of conspiracy that looms over our government......  where is the TRANSPARENCY?

**If Stephen Harper is really proroguing because he wants to switch things up in the Senate and put in more Conservative seats, well thats politics and its completely within his right to pull that card BUT ...

~I am NOT COOL with a Prime Minister that needs to stop democracy at such an IMPORTANT time just to do it.  With all the man power and resources available to the government they should be able to multitask. .... where are the PRIORITIES??

**If Stephen Harper is proroguing because he needs to to suddenly send the MP’s back to their ridings to talk to constituents and get feedback about how to deal with the economic crisis?  Why now?  They didn’t do it when they first found out about ‘the crisi’...... oh well maybe they needed to give the residents time to figure out how it really is affecting them.  Yes but, between elections, vacations, and last years decision to prorogue (to avoid election/coalition) they do not seem to be accomplishing enough to rationalize throwing out 37 Bills on such short notice.  We know how to contact our MP’s even when they are in Ottawa.  If this is really a priority for them why not address it with a little common sense.  Tell the Mayors, unions and residents that their MP’s will be returning to there ridings at a specific date.  Give them time to collect their ideas so when their MP’s return they can have a productive dialog.

~I am NOT COOL with a Prime Minister who will abuse his power because his ego has consumed him.  Does he just want to take a vacation?  Is his tie feeling to tight around his neck?  Is he sweating a little more at work these days?  Would he rather go hang out at the Olympics and party with his ol’buddies?  If not what is the reason?? ...... where is the RESPECT for Canadians and their tax dollars??

** So ask yourself why!  This is our Country.  This is our future.  On Saturday January 23 from 1:00-4:00 pm Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament are rallying at cities across the country our local Moncton rally is at City Hall on Main Street.

**There are 150+ Canadian University professors that specialize Political Science, Law, Etc(related fields) that have signing a petition stating that proroguing parliament at this time is illegal and undemocratic under Canadian Law.

**On December 30th Stephen Harper announced - without consulting anyone - that he will be Proroguing Parliament and suspending democracy until March 3. This is the second time he has done this in under two years.

**“When a government starts trying to cancel dissent or avoid dissent is frankly when it’s rapidly losing its moral authority to govern.” (Stephen Harper, Canadian Press, April 18, 2005)

For Immediate Release

(January 7th, 2010 – Moncton NB) Score One For The Underdog is the sophomore release from Moncton’s Tireless Sedans. Picking up where 2009’s Parts + Labour EP left off, the indie-folk, alt-country and just a hint of prog influences still exist. But make no mistake – this is a rock n’ roll record, available from Superbob Records on February 2nd, 2010.

Strong songwriting from singer/guitarist Dave Rahmer is fleshed out by the driving backbeat of drummer Mark McGinnis, the fluid bass playing of Chad Lifford, and the vintage Rhodes and organ sounds plus angelic voice of Jenna Gallant. From the crisp acoustic opening of “The Lattice” to the soulful groove of “Ironic Twists”, the twang of “Let You Down” to the shredding guitar ending “Another Song No One Will Hear”, this album channels a sound that is immediately familiar with a depth that requires multiple listens. Score One For The Underdog draws inspiration from the long New Brunswick winters, good books, growing older, love, loss, and (as a natural result of the aforementioned) drowning your sorrows.

Preview tracks are already charting at #4 on CHMA radio Sackville.

"The musicality of Wilco is there, with the depth and jangle of Sloan, and a bit of unusual song construction … Between the strong musical lines and intelligent lyrics lay a spark of magic that is neither describable nor forgettable." – Wildy’s World

"Beautiful acoustic melodies and Rahmer’s unassuming vocals and joyous guitar solo will go over well on a country drive with the windows down and not a worry in the world." – Jambands.ca

"The soft and mellow dramatic roots guitar and furious drumming sync and pair up with the rest of the bands energetic side." – URBNET.com
